How To Fill Out A Job Application Like A Pro

While the overall format of a job application will vary from place to place, each one is generally going to ask you to provide the same information. Set yourself up for success and fill out every job application like a pro by following this checklist:

Be Prepared

Make sure you have all the necessary information together in one place and ready to access while you’re filling out the application. This could be your resume, a list of references, a digital portfolio, or anything else that the particular position might require of you to apply.

Upload Your Resume

Most (but not all) online job applications allow you to directly upload your resume. Not only does that often make it easier to complete the rest of the application, as some sites will autofill other pages based off the information in your resume, but it helps you look more professional and driven. If you don’t already have a digital copy/PDF of your resume, now would be a good time to craft one!

Provide Details

Give an accurate description of your previous job duties so that the hiring manager who looks through your application has a solid idea of what your work experience is like. Depending on your work experience, what this looks like may differ. For example, if you have an entry-level customer service job on your resume, it goes without saying that it probably involved answering phones, stocking shelves, and handling sales transactions. Include this information if you have the space to do so, but if you have accomplishments from the job such as exceeding a sales quota or consistently positive reviews from customers, these details are more eye-catching and work as proof that you did your job well.

Use References

If you have references, list them! If the job application you’re filling out doesn’t provide a space for that, make sure there is room on your resume.

Be Honest

There’s a reason the old adage “honesty is the best policy” is still around: it’s true. Employers have ways to check for dishonesty on a resume or job application. If you have a gap in your work history or a termination on your record, the best course of action is to just be honest about it, even though it destroys the image of a “perfect” resume. The reality is that there is no such thing as a perfect resume, or even a perfect employee. If you have learned from your mistakes and are willing to put in the work to be better, that will show more about your character than the mistakes themselves.

Keep Information Consistent Across Documents

It’s inevitable that at some point, your resume is going to need a makeover to stay consistent with your updated contact information and work history. If you have a new phone number or email address, make sure that is reflected on both the job application and the resume. Also, make sure start and end dates are the same on all documents stating your work history.

Don’t Leave Any Blanks

Fill out everything on a job application that is applicable to you, even if you already provided said information on your resume. If you’re asked a question that doesn’t apply to you, make sure you fill in “N/A or Not Applicable”, and if necessary, state why.

Proofread Carefully

A little mistake here and there certainly isn’t the end of the world, but it doesn’t hurt to proofread your work for spelling and grammar. This is doubly true if you’re applying for a clerical position or a job that otherwise requires a lot of writing.
